TAGHeuer lenses with Night Vision technology
More than 210 million Americans drive daily, but not all drivers have driving eyeglasses-not even close. As tens of thousands of Americans die each year from automobile accidents, it’s extremely important that everyone who operates a vehicle can do so with crisp and clear vision. Here are several driving lens options that ECPs can offer to patients who may require some optical assistance on the road.
Transitions‘ Drivewear‘ lenses from Younger Optics merge Transitions Photochromic Technology with NuPolar’ polarization to form a unique lens for driving. Transitions Drivewear
lenses darken and adjust their color according to daylight conditions, even behind the windshield of a car, from high contrast olive green in overcast weather to copper when driving on a
sunny day (copper is the preferred color for driving, as it enhances reds and greens and provides great depth perception and definition). In bright outdoor light, Transitions Drivewear
lenses darken to a rich brown.
Younger also offers the NuPolar family of polarized lenses in gray, brown, green, and copper, as well as in gradient gray and gradient brown. These lenses provide high-efficiency
polarization to cut blinding glare while driving.
Xperio UV™ polarized sun lenses by Essilor of America, Inc. utilize excellent materials and lens design to produce impressive driving lenses. Xperio UV lenses virtually eliminate glare
and provide scratch resistance, sharp outdoor color perception, and easy cleanability. Available lens colors include gray, brown, and gray-green. This fall, new color combinations will be
added to the existing range of Xperio UV lens colors. Xperio UV lenses are suitable for driving with a UV protection of 100% through the front of the lens and 98.5% from the back of the
lens (this is accomplished with a backside no-glare coating and hardcoat). The big benefit to the patient is that these lenses have an Eye-Sun Protection Factor (E-SPF) of 50+, which
means that an eye protected by an Xperio UV lens will receive 50 times less UV exposure than with no protection at all.
The POLAR PHD™ Driver lens from Serengeti is made of Trivex‘ material and promises stunning visual acuity through its polarized photochromic Spectral Control and polarization
technology. Proprietary hydrophobic and oleophobic treatments help repel water, fingerprints, and debris on these lenses. A backside anti-reflective treatment helps eliminate glare
from backside reflections.
The company’s DRIVERS GOLD options are made of glass and add a gold-flash mirror that reflects visible and infrared wavelengths.
For Rx driving lenses, Serengeti also offers the VARIO Drive Thin Design program, which features state-of-the-art fabrication technology and formulation with NXT‘ lenses made of
Trivex material. The result is a lens design that ranges from +6.00D to -8.00D in single vision and progressive options. Due to customization, the Vario Drive Thin Designs are 72% thinner
and 45% lighter than traditional lenses.
As a company that pushes the envelope of adaptive lens technology, Transitions Optical, Inc. offers its Transitions‘ XTRActive‘ lens, which is available through many lens manufacturers.
The special formulation of these lenses allows them to be extra dark outdoors and darken in an automobile, a benefit both photochromic and non-photochromic lens wearers will enjoy.
Premiere Vision’s TAG Heuer has released ophthalmic lenses with Night Vision technology, specifically designed to correct dark-induced myopia and reduce glare without changing
the wearer’s color perception. Driving is far more dangerous at night than in daylight: Only a small percentage of road miles are driven in the dark, yet nearly half of all auto fatalities occur
at night. With pupil dilation, glare and reduced peripheral vision contribute to ocular compromise, making driving lenses like these incredibly valuable.
As you can see, ECPs have a plethora of choices to offer patients who drive. Be sure to ride this opportunity home!
