With so many generic and proprietary frame materials on the market, it’s hard to keep up with what’s out there and the features each one offers. Think your knowledge of frame materials is pretty good? Take this short frame material IQ test and find out.

QUESTION 1:
It is tough, unyielding, solid (opaque) in coloring, and is used in sport-safety eyewear. What material is it?

ANSWER: NYLON
Nylon is a tough, durable material designed to maintain its shape through temperature extremes, so it is generally considered a non-adjustable material. Hilco’s C2 Leader sport safety eyewear is made from nylon. To overcome the adjusting problem, the C2’s temples are made of thermoplastic elastomer and have a wire core, thus making them fully adjustable.

QUESTION2:
What common frame material is now being offered in a textured matte finish that is often mistaken for wood?

ANSWER: ACETATE
The Brooklyn Spectacles Wood Collection is made from acetate plastic, and the surface is hand-finished to give a realistic woodlike finish. The use of acetate in place of real timber offers the wearer greater durability with the benefit of tailoring the fit through traditional adjustment techniques.

These innovative glasses offer a contemporary take on a classic look, while standing the test of time in both style and comfort.

QUESTION 3:
Can you name the plastic material that is very lightweight, strong, flexible, perspiration-resistant, and is often used in eyewear designed for vigorous activities?

ANSWER: TR-90
This material is a thermoplastic polyamide that is light and flexible yet it’s super strong with memory so the frames return to their original shape after being flexed. Under severe testing conditions, TR-90 keeps its properties in both low- and high-extreme temperatures, making it the ultimate performance material for sunglasses. It’s also hypoallergenic and is FDA approved. Like nylon frames, TR-90 frames are considered non-adjustable unless a metal core is added to the temple. Companies like Costa, Aspex Eyewear, and Eastern States Eyewear use it in their eyewear collections.

QUESTION4:
What metal is hypoallergenic and almost 100% pure?

ANSWER: PURE TITANIUM
Frames advertised as pure or 100% titanium should follow the ASTM standards that state that the frame must contain at least 90% titanium (i.e., Grades 1-4, 5-11, 16-18, 26-28) and this shall make up at least 90% by weight of the total frame weight.

Many frames that contain only 75%-89% titanium will still say “titanium” on the demo lenses and/or frame. These frames do not possess the same features of pure titanium frames so they’re more susceptible to corrosion and may not be hypoallergenic. For example, frames made with as much as 90% titanium will have nickel surface treatments or colorings. A high-quality titanium frame will be designed with adjustment points around the chassis ends and bridge. Companies such as Charmant Group and Silhouette Optical, Ltd. have proprietary versions of pure titanium frames having exceptional quality.

QUESTION 5:
Which plastic frame material has been available for over 40 years and is lightweight, flexible, hypoallergenic, and has shape memory, making it ideal for sunwear?

ANSWER: OPTYL
Introduced in the ’70s, Optyl is lightweight and hypoallergenic. Its color effects are unique and extremely fashionable. It requires a great deal of heat to soften it and once it’s soft, it’s easily adjusted. Once it cools, it rigidly holds its shape. If warmed again without holding it, the material will spring back to its manufactured shape. Optyl is used exclusively by Safilo for some of its most unique eyewear.
