Upstate New York optical lab and eyewear manufacturer Rochester Optical is well ahead of this curve with its propriety Smart GOLDWearable eyewear technology promises to be huge because it has the potential for changing how people access data and interact with their environment (and each other). Its capability to change the way we live, like the personal computer did, makes it a category to consider. In 2013, Google, Inc. introduced Google Glass to the world, with the second generation of Glass expected to launch sometime this year.

Upstate New York optical lab and eyewear manufacturer Rochester Optical is well ahead of this curve with its propriety Smart GOLD (Glasses Optimized Lens Designs) lenses for Glass and other smart eyewear products.

Smart GOLD lenses are optimized for wearable tech using a heads-up display (HUD). The HUD is typically located 25-30mm away from one or both eyes with a perceived distance ranging from 4 ft. to 15 ft. Rochester Optical’s Smart GOLD solution creates an additional optical center at the location where the HUD will be viewed, mitigating the induced prismatic effect at that point of the lens. Additionally, the area surrounding this secondary focal point is further optimized to reduce the off-axis aberrations associated with the lens’ peripheral optics (imagine a “no-line” double D segment lens design to understand the concept).

Although Google is the most recognizable manufacturer of wearable technology eyewear, Rochester Optical also carries several other smart glasses, such as the Android OS (operating system)-based VuzixM100 Smart Glasses by Vuzix Corp., which features an enhanced monocular display; Recon Instruments’ Recon Jet, designed for active lifestyles; and Seiko Epson Corp.’s Android-based Epson Moverio BT-200 Smart Glasses, featuring an augmented-reality, 3D-media experience.

Smart GOLD lenses are made from free-form designs and each is surfaced for use with its specific wearable tech device. They are available in single vision, FT-28, and the Rochester Optical digital progressive.

Rochester Optical’s Smart GOLD lenses are leading the way for the smart eyewear category. These lenses’ clever design and technological applications make them a valuable piece of the emerging wearable electronics market.
