PRINTS and patterns have enjoyed a resurgence in the fashion world but one that’s high on the popularity list for fall is polka dots—not just the classic black and white combination but a whole array of color groupings. Part of the whole retro craze, polka dots are prominent not just in apparel but in accessories as well for those who want the look but in a subtle way.
Marc Jacobs went all out on the Fall 2011 runway with the pattern in head-to-toe dresses and accessories. Diane Von Furstenberg and Stella McCartney were more sedate but still got the message across—dots are cool and fun to wear. And if you don’t want to go for the whole experience, there are shirts, sweaters, and skirts to wear that will liven up a solid wardrobe and make for a trendier look.
Accessories like handbags, scarves, headbands, tights, shoes, rain boots, and dome rings can make for a fashion-forward look without shouting it out. Men can cash in on the style as well with blazers, ties, pocket squares, and cufflinks. Eyeglasses, readers, and sunglasses are also part of the craze, with everything from cut-out and laser treatments depicting the pattern to the dots being integrated into the acetate itself.
