Etnia Barcelona’s Capsule series emotes the provacative artist.
A new collection by Etnia Barcelona, a company known for its creative and colorful eyewear, pays homage to artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The unisex styles, which became available last month, represent three dramatic, renowned paintings.
Fallen Angel (1981) has been described as “an electrifying painting and portrait of self expression.” In This Case (1983) combines “complementary colors and contrasts between light and dark to create a rage-filled representation of [the artist]himself”, and Glenn (1984) “represents a monstrous, feverish, static, black head resembling a mask radiating energy and emotion.”
Basquiat’s conceptual graffiti roots propelled him onto the New York art scene in the ’80s, and his works addressed such themes as politics, racism and social hypocrisy. A section of the paintings are shown as a pattern inside the temples.
Each black acetate style, which comes in both round and square shapes, has gold-plated accents to incorporate Basquiat’s signature crown symbol inside the hinge, on the outside of the temple and on top of each frame front. Lenses and designs come in colors that best portray the work for which they were named: Fallen Angel in blue, Glenn in yellow and In This Case in red.
Mirrored lenses are shock-resistant and treated with anti-scratch, anti-static and anti-reflective coatings. They are also hydrophobic and oleophobic, offer maximum UV protection and are resistant to temperatures above 752°F (400 °C).
According to a spokesperson for Etnia Barcelona, “Like the works of Basquiat, this collection transmits the transgressive, powerful and emotional aspects of his works that made the artist one of the most important figures in the culture and art of today,”
