Today is World Sight Day, held every year on the second Thursday of October to raise global awareness of blindness and vision impairment. Coordinated by the International Agency to Prevent Blindness under the Vision 2020 Global Initiative, World Sight Day is commemorated around the world as a call to action for universal eye health.

Vision 2020 USA is holding a briefing and luncheon today in Washington, DC, on the new eye health consensus study from the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). Read the study here.
“SIGHT – The Story of Vision,” a one-hour documentary that traces progress in eyecare and vision solutions over the past 800 years, premieres today on PBS stations across the country. For the tenth year, North American companies, schools, practices and organizations joined forces to form a coalition supporting Optometry Giving Sight’s World Sight Day Challenge, which runs from September through October and this year supports the organization’s Our Children’s Vision campaign.

Among the major fundraising efforts to support the campaign are:
Essilor of America is partnering with the Essilor Vision Foundation to host a Kids Vision Fest at its Dallas headquarters, where more than 400 students will receive eye exams and glasses.
VSP Global is holding an outreach event in New Orleans to focus on child eye health, and staff are raising funds for a travel fellowship for faculty to teach specialty topics at the School of Optometry in Nicaragua.
CooperVision is conducting its fifth annual “Fight for Sight” campaign, in which employees participate in fundraising events at their local CooperVision sites.
