Nearly everyone who has Internet access has looked for directions online. On a tablet or smartphone, you grab a map and with a flick of your thumb and index finger, you zoom in and out as you desire. In an instant, you can move from a map of the earth to an aerial view of your own backyard. If you think of the light spectrum this way, you’ll begin to understand what Essilor of America, Inc. has done with its Crizal‘ Prevencia™ No-Glare lenses.
Think of the entire visible light spectrum (roughly 380nm to 780nm) as a view of Earth. It looks like any of a thousand other drawings you have seen since your first days in school. Now start dragging the spectrum in, so you can look at specific areas-say, just the range from 400nm to 495nm. Drag it in again and look at just the band between 415nm and 455nm. Think of this area as your backyard. This is what Essilor is doing: examining each nanometer of visible light spectrum independently and finding out some interesting things.
In a study conducted by scientists from the Paris Vision Institute, in collaboration with Essilor International, researchers found that blue-turquoise light (in the area between 465nm and 495nm) provides many benefits. In addition to being important for sharp vision, accurate color recognition, and perception, this band of light also helps regulate our circadian rhythm-or sleep-wake cycle-keeping our overall mood healthy and “keeping the blues away.”
However, when you look at the wavelengths between 415nm and 455nm in the blue-violet light region, researchers discovered these wavelengths are damaging to the retina and, in fact, can lead to retinal cell death. Sunlight is a major source of this blue-violet light, but it is also prevalent in many increasingly common forms of indoor lighting, as well as the LED displays found in many of our common digital devices.
To provide our eyes, minds, and bodies with beneficial light while blocking damaging light, Essilor has developed the Crizal Prevencia No-Glare lenses. According to Essilor, this technology selectively filters out both harmful blue-violet and UV rays, and allows beneficial blue-turquoise light through while providing excellent clarity of vision. Essilor boasts that Crizal Prevencia No-Glare lenses deflect 20% of harmful blue-violet light and in recent lab tests, it reduced retinal cell death by 25%.
The Crizal family of No-Glare (anti-reflective) lenses includes glare reduction, smudge resistance, dust repellence, water repellence, and scratch resistance. Crizal Prevencia has an Eye-Sun Protection Factor (E-SPF) of 25, which provides wearers’ eyes with 25 times more protection from UV than with no lens at all.
Essilor’s Crizal Prevencia provides superior no-glare performance but it goes one step further-it deflects the blues too.
