Vision-Ease’s ChangeRx is a lightweight photochromic lens that uses ‘in-mass’ manufacturing.
Your ideal patient for photochromic lenses is seated in front of you. You discuss the features and benefits of photochromic lenses and your patient is really excited. However, as soon as you mention the extra cost, your patient frowns. Many times, lens selection comes down to price. If you have a patient who could benefit from a photochromic lens yet claims she cannot afford the cost, be ready to offer the new ChangeRx lens by Vision-Ease Lens. This new product makes photochromic lenses available to people with varying budgets.
According to Vision-Ease, your patient will do a double take when it comes to affordability on these photochromic lenses. For starters, ChangeRx is a plastic lens with a 1.50 refractive index (similar to standard CR-39‘ plastic lenses). A great feature of this material is that it has a specific gravity of 1.18 g/cm3, which results in an 11% lighter lens when compared to standard CR-39 lenses…and lighter lenses are more comfortable lenses.
LIGHT PASSES THROUGH
Upon activation, ChangeRx lenses darken to an ISO Sunglass Category 3 at 50ËšF in less than 60 seconds. In simpler terms, Vision-Ease uses the terminology Total Light Transmittance (TLT), or the percentage of light that passes through the lens. After stepping outdoors for two minutes, TLT is 15.8% (84.2% absorption). For patients who don’t care for the slight residual tint remaining when inside, they will appreciate that ChangeRx lenses are almost clear at their lightest state, absorbing only 11% (or TLT of 89%). This is close to standard clear CR-39 plastic lenses that have a TLT of about 8%. Additionally, your patient will appreciate knowing that ChangeRx lenses provide 100% UVA and UVB protection.
Activation and deactivation times are another factor to consider when recommending photochromic lenses. Vision-Ease claims that ChangeRx darkens and lightens faster than leading photochromic lens brands and after two minutes outdoors, ChangeRx is darker than other leading brands. Two minutes after entering a building, ChangeRx is clearer than both leading photochromic lenses too.
How is this possible? ChangeRx technology places the photochromic dye molecules right into the plastic monomer mix. This technology is called in-mass manufacturing. Because the molecules are embedded throughout the plastic monomer, the result is lenses with uniform reactivity when exposed to UV light. Another benefit of in-mass manufacturing is that the photochromic dye is not bonded or coated to the surface of the lens, where surface abrasions can impact the effectiveness of the dye.
ChangeRx is available in single vision with a power range of -14.00D to +9.00D, with a +2.00D cylinder in finished single vision, and -4.00D cylinder in surfaced stock. Early this year, bifocal wearers can look forward to D28s, available with a power range of -13.00D to +9.75D up to a -4.00D cylinder, and Vision-Ease’s Novel and Novella progressive lenses will be available from -10.00D to +6.50D up to a -4.00D cylinder. ChangeRx also comes in finished single vision with and without anti-reflective treatment from -6.00D to +3.00D, up to a -2.00D cylinder. You can choose between gray or brown photochromic colors.
When options boil down to cost, have ChangeRx in your optical tool chest, and your patients will love you for offering lenses that fit every pocketbook.
