Announced at Vision Expo East and launching May 1, 2018, Essilor’s Essential Blue Series blue light filtering lenses provide up to three times more protection from harmful blue light than standard clear lenses, according to the company. “We will establish blue light as a new category,” Essilor’s Sherianne James said during the recent optical trade show in New York City. Now, 100% of Essilor’s clear lenses will offer the option of blue light protection.
While Essilor offered blue light protection in a clear lens before 2018 with Varilux digital, Eyezen+ single vision and Crizal Prevencia lenses (approximately 15% of Essilor’s core product portfolio), this year the company is expanding its clear lens blue light protection to all Essilor progressive and single vision lenses.
“We believe ECPs should have the choice to protect every patient from harmful blue light,” the company announced at Vision Expo East, “and consumers should have the option for blue light protection in a clear lens.” Consumers are willing to pay up to $40 for blue light protection, the company announced.
Harmful blue light wavelengths are the blue-violet portion of the light spectrum between 415 and 455 nanometers believed to be the most toxic to retinal cells. Emerging research has pointed to a possible link between exposure to these wavelengths and long-term vision issues such as age-related macular degeneration.
