ACUVUE OASYS for PRESBYOPIA lens boasts new technology that offers sharp, clear vision and all-day comfort—just what presbyopes are looking for.
Most eyecare professionals (ECPs) would agree that fitting presbyopes with contact lenses is more challenging than fitting younger patients with single vision lenses. In addition to requiring correction for both near and far vision, there’s an added challenge of finding a comfortable lens for this late-30s/ over-40 group. There is good news on both accounts with the ACUVUE® OASYS™ for PRESBYOPIA contact lenses produced by VISTAKON, Division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc.
Acuvue Oasys for PRESBYOPIA employs a technology known as Stereo Precision Technology™. According to the company, this technology provides contact lens wearers with a smooth transition in power that is located on the front surface of the lens. The gradual change in power gives more balanced distance, intermediate, and near vision with less reliance on illumination than some older multifocal lenses. VISTAKON also notes that, unlike many other presbyopic lenses, there is much less trouble with glare, haloes, or ghosting. This means presbyopic patients who work in dim lighting or variable light settings may benefit from trying the Acuvue Oasys lens.
DRYNESS AND COMFORT
Many contact lens wearers in the presbyopic category complain of dryness and discomfort with lens wear. Anyone who has fit soft contact lenses knows how difficult it can be finding comfort for those patients that spend long hours on a computer, travel frequently, or are exposed to dry heat and air conditioning regularly.
Senofilcon A is a new generation of silicone hydrogel material used in Acuvue Oasys lenses. The increased oxygen transmissibility of the silicone hydrogel material makes extended lens wear safer. Research has shown senofilcon A can relieve some of the common contact lens-related dryness and discomfort symptoms and help patients enjoy longer hours of comfortable wear. In fact, VISTAKON data indicates this material is 50% smoother than other available silicone hydrogel lenses.
Another weapon in this lens’ arsenal for reducing contact lens-related dryness symptoms and promoting comfort is HYDRACLEAR® PLUS, which is an im-proved formulation of the unique HYDRACLEAR technology that combines high-performance base materials with a moisture-rich wetting agent. This moisture-rich property promises even longer lasting comfort in extreme and dry environments.
Ultra-violet (UV) blocking is another feature of Acuvue Oasys for PRESBYOPIA. The lens blocks more than 96% of UVA rays and 99% of UVB rays, meeting the highest UV-blocking standards for contact lenses. Of course, since contact lenses do not protect the delicate eyelid area from UV rays, patients should still be encouraged to wear sunglasses and/or a wide brimmed hat when outdoors.
Acuvue Oasys for PRESBYOPIA is indicated for daily wear and may be worn for up to six nights and seven days of extended wear at the recommendation of the ECP. The lens’ diameter is 14.3mm and the base curve is 8.4mm. It is available in powers from -9.00D to +6.00D in 0.25D increments. Add powers are low (+0.75D to +1.25D), mid (+1.50D to +1.75D), and high (+2.00D to +2.50D).
The lens is also approved for use with all chemical disinfecting solutions including peroxides and multipurpose solutions.
With its potential for reducing contact lens-related dryness and aiding in comfort, Acuvue Oasys for PRESBYOPIA soft lenses are a welcome addition to the arsenal of presbyopic contact lenses practitioners have available.
